101 photos of KC type buses from around the country taken over the last ten years.

Usual happenings in the Cork area with some extra rail photos. Also a visit to Plaxton's in the UK which would include several Ulsterbus Plaxton Premiers.

Photographs taken during June. A nice selection of school buses in West Cork and some more city service photos. Also the SCs are recieving branding.

The 12th Innishannon Steam And Vintage rally took place on Sunday 31st May and Monday 1st June. Weather was ,as usual, very good. This collecton shows just a small amount of what was on display.

The DWM class entered service in late 2000 and has fifteen members. All were new to Limerick for replacement of their KCs. They were a combination of a Daf SB120 and a Wright body.

A total of thirtyfive Van Hool Hiline Acron coaches with Cummins L10 engines were put in service by CIE in 1986. CVH1 to 35 had matching registrations, SI2001 to 2035. They passed to Bus Eireann in February 1987 and joined the school transport fleet around 2001,some being reclassified CVS. All are withdrawn from service now.

A lot of photos of new buses in Cork city,from the SLs to VWDs to the ex-Broadstone SRs. Also 2609 paired up with 2716 at Fota.

Bus Eireann put the DP class into service in 1999. They were on lease and unique to Cork. DP1 to 10 were registered 99C22528 to 22537. The conbination here was a Dennis Dart with a Plaxton Pointer body. All were returned off lease by 2003.

Dublin Bus put the AD class in service in 1994. AD1 to 70 were registered 93D31001, 94D3002 to 3040, 94D33041 to 33070. They were an Alexander Setanta body on a DAF SB220 chasis. The class wore a large variety of liveries. Most of them joined the Bus Eireann school fleet around 2004.

The TE class were the first vehicles put into service soley by Bus Eireann. TE1 to 20 were new in 1988 and 21 to 40 in 1989. They consisted of a an Alexander body on a Leyland chasis.

This DVH class, which consists of twenty vehicles, came into service in 1993 with Bus Eireann. The chasis is a Daf MB230 with a Van Hool Alizee body.

Bus Eireann placed the MH class into service in 1999. There are 33 buses in total in this class. MH2 & 18 were prematurely withdrawn due to accident damage. Most of the class is on schools now.

The OP class, Optare Excel, came about in 2004. All were imported from the UK. They were imported for schools work though some have been used on revenue earning services and shuttles.

This VC type was introduced in 2003. Once again the B10m chasis is utilised with a Caetano Enigma body. Up to 318 were new as tour coaches. VC319 is withdrawn due to fire damage.

VC201 to 215 were placed in service in 2001. They were among the last coaches leased by Bus Eireann. The were a Caetano Enigma bodied Volvo B10M. They were withdrawn in 2004. Some of them are still in Ireland with private operaters.

This type of VC was introduced in 1996 by Bus Eireann with the last ones into service in 1998,fairly similar to VC1 - 22 but with slightly modified bodywork. This type of coach worked right across the Bus Eireann system with every garage having them in stock. A very strong and durable bus and quite popular amongst drivers also. Some of them were still carrying out expressway work in 2008. Most of them are on schools now so they will be around for a lot longer. Some members of this class have been prematurely withdrawn,39,42,67,73, and 146 withdrawn for fire damage.

VC1 to 20 were new in 1994 and the remaining two were new in 1995. They have a Volvo B10M-62 chasis with Salvador Caetano Algarve II bodywork. Most of these are on schools now and VC11 and 12 are withdrawn due to fire damage.

The DPL class came out in 2000 and was in existance for a few mnoths. They were on lease from Dennis until the DPC class arrived in mid to late 2000. They were twenty three of them,allocated to Galway, Limerick and Waterford. This feature contains only the Galway batch.

The M class was introduced in 1970 by CIE. It consists of 213 vehicles,reistered 1 - 213IK. It has a Leyland Leopard PSU5 chasis with the bodywork, in metal section frames, built at Spa Road. CIE were unhappy with the Leyland engines so a replacement programme began with them. Some buses were suffixed with a C,G or a D to their fleet number. The D meant the vehicle was fitted with a DAF engine, the G meant General Motors and the C stood for Cummins. Only one MC existed,MC167. Eighty-one MGs and seventy-two MDs came about. Later an S was added when they joined the school transport fleet. Some Ms gave up to thirty years service. MD95, 136, 148, 156 and 191 were bought by the Defence Forces and MD29 went to the Scouting Association of Ireland. Any Ms that were in existance in 1987 transferred to Bus Eireann.

The KD type was introduced by CIE in 1981. It took until 1983 for the entire class of 366 vehicles to enter service. All but two (146 & 191) were fitted with a Detroit Diesel 6V-71 engines. The prototype, KD1, was built by FFG in Hamburg and the remaining vehicles were built by Bombardier in Shannon. Reigistrations were as follows: KD1 - 1 JZH, KD2 to 201 - 2 to 201 JZL, KD202 to 300 - 202 to 300 OZU, KD301 to 365 - GSI 301 to 365, KD366 - YSI 366. KD1 - 48/51 - 174/96 - 323 & 326 - 366 passed over to Dublin Bus in 1987 with the remaining vehicles,KD49/50/175 - 195/324/5,passed over to Bus Eireann. The entire class is withdrawn. KD156/99/221/235 & 353 are in preservation.

The SC class was placed in service by Bus Eireann in 2001 and 2004. The class has 72 members. SC1 to 27 are 2001 while the remainder are 2004.

THE RV CLASS WERE INTRODUCED IN 1997. ALTHOUGH THE LAST ONES HAVE 99 REGS THEY ENTERED SERVICE IN 2000.

Cork City Route 7 is a cross city route and operates from Ballyvolane to Donnybrook via Dillon's Cross, City Centre and Douglas and return. Regular buses on this road are VWL101/2/3/11/27 and 128. The 7A operates on the southside only. It runs from St. Patrick Street to teh Well Road via Eglintine.

The RH class was introduced by Dublin Bus over a period of four years starting in 1990. The bus consisted of a Leyland Olympian with Alexander bodywork. Most of them are now withdrawn and gone to the UK for further service with other operators.

The WV class was put in service by Dublin Bus in 1999 and was spread out over three years.

Dublin Bus introduced the AV class in 2000. It consists of 448 vehicles spread out over six years. (2000 - AV1 to 185, 2001 - 186 to 229, 2002 - 230 to 282, 2003 - 283 to 362, 2004 - 363 to 398, 2005 - 399 to 448) It's an Alexander ALX400 body on a Volvo B7TL chasis. The AV class is the backbone of the Dublin Bus fleet. So far AV178 is the only member withdrawn,due to fire damage in May 2007.

Cork City Route 220 is a Park And Ride that operates at Christmas only from the County Hall to City Centre. Sometimes it has operated during the year at Easter etc. DPCs and VWMs ussually operate this route.

Cork City route 1 is the Northside Orbital operating from Bishopstown to Lotabeg (not to be confused with the 8) via Wilton, Sundays Well, Knocknaheeney, Farranree, Blackpool and Ballyvolane. It is mostly used by students commuting from Cork's Northside to C.I.T. and FAS in the morning and evening. Any bus can turn up on this route.

Cork City route 10 is a cross city route that operates from Mahon Point (Jacob's Island) to Glasheen via Ballinlough, City Centre and Bandon Road and return. VWL140/1/2/4 are the regulars on this road. Past vehicles would be KC148/60/70, KD188, DA4/8. The 10A operates from the South Mall to Jacob's Island via the Boreenmana Road. VWL173 is the only bus on this route. All buses for both 10 and 10A are branded accordingly.

In past years some buses were able to display Happy Xmas and Happy New Year. Unfortunately I don't have many photos of these but what I have is in this feature.

Cork City Route 3 is a cross city route that operates from Farranree to Ballyphehane via Blackpool,City Centre,Turners Cross and return. Regular buses on this road would be VWL104/5/12/3. Past buses were KD179-82, KC130-6,63.

Cork City route 14 operates from the St. Patrick Street to the C.U.H via The Lough and Togher. Regular buses on this road are VWL115/6/7/9. VWL118 was part of this road also,but this bus was burned out in the C.U.H. on 21/01/2006. Past regulars would have been KC149/169,KD189 & DA10.

Cork City route 8 is a cross city running from Bishopstown to Lotabeg,via Wilton, City Centre and Mayfield and return. The 8A northside covers Lotamore while the 8A southside extends to Curraheen village. Regular buses on this route are VWL158,170-177 and all buses are branded for this route.

Midleton Town Service started up on 8th December 2008. It operates a loop service around Midleton serving principle areas such as schools, the shopping centre and the railway station. The vehicle in use is a Mercedes OH1416 with a Wright Urbanranger body. It is registered 94C18020 with a previous UK reg of L610 OWB. These photos were taken on 10 December 2008.

Route 5 operates from C.I.T. to Kent Station via City Centre and return.It's a cross city route.Up until 2000 it ran from C.I.T. to the Old Mallow Road. The Mallow Road is still served by the 5A which operates off a board. Buses allocated to this route are VWL159,166-9. All buses carry branding for this route. Past regular buses were VWL107/8/31/2,DA5/6,KC158,65 and KD183.

Route 12 operates from Merchant's Quay in the city centre to Glenthorn Estate via The Glen and Blackpool. VWL129 and DPC25 are usually found on this route. Past regulars would have been KC153/7/9.

Route 2 operates from Knocknaheeney to Mahon via Cathedral Road,City Centre, Ballintemple and Blackrock. It is a cross city route. VWL109/10/4 are regularly on this route. Past regulars were KC140-4,KD175-8 and DA9.

Cork's route 19 is the Southside Orbital route. It runs from Mahon to Bishopstown via Douglas, Ballyphehane and Togher. The Mahon terminus is shared with the 2 and the Bishopstown terminus is shared with the 5. Regular buses on this road are VWL121/3 and 138.

Cork route 6 operates from the South Mall to Grange Road via the South Douglas Road. This is a collection of photos of this route over the past few years.

The Cork City Council Black Ash Park & Ride was established on 29 November 2003. It is run in conjunction with Bus Eireann. Three double deckers operate this route in a designated livery. They are Volvo B7TL chasis with an East Lancs Vyking body. Fleet numbers are DD31 to 33,with regs 04C12277/9/81. DPC type buses operated this service until the arrival of the deckers in May 2004. This week the Black Ash Park and Ride is five years old and has proved itself a huge success. I have put together some photos of the service over the last five years.

The original list of stations on this line were Summerhill North, Blairs Halt, Tivoli, Dunkettle, Little Isand, Queenstown Junction (now Glounthaune), Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Mogeely, Killeagh and Youghal. Parts of this line are still active(Blairs Hill to Glounthaune). Glounthaune to Midleton is currently under redevelopment,due to be completed in April 2009. Some of the photos will show work in progress.

ON 10/10/2008 THE FIRST TRAIN IN OVER 20 YEARS CROSSED OVER ON TO THE MIDLETON BRANCH. IT WAS A PER-WAY TRAIN WITH A CARGO OF CONCRETE SLEEPERS AND WAS HAULED BY 162 + 171. THE WEATHER WAS MISERABLE AND THIS DID EFFECT THE QUALITY OF SOME OF THE PHOTOS.

The VWM class were new in 2000 and consisted of ten buses. Two of these have since been scrapped following fires.VWM1 went in December 2003 and VWM4 went in October 2005.

In Limerick MC10 now carries a Vodafone AOA and DWM13 carries an AOA for Limerick City Moving Together. I would like to thank Mike Fennelly for the use of his pictures.

ABD75X parked on Popes Quay in Cork on 20/06/2007. This bus was new to Northampton Corparation and was numbered 75 in their fleet. She was acting as a mobile catering unit for a festival taking place in Cork.

THE LS CLASS ARE LEYLAND LYNXS THAT WERE IMPORTED FROM VARIOUS OPERATERS IN THE UK FOR USE AS SCHOOL BUSES BY BUS EIREANN.

THE AW CLASS ENTERED SERVICE IN 2000 WITH DUBLIN BUS. IT HAS TWENTY MEMBERS. REGISTRATION PLATES ARE AW1 IS 00D65001 AND AW20 IS 65020.

THE GTS CONSTELLATION IS A MILLENIUM CLASS CRUISE SHIP OF THE CELEBRITY CRUISES CRUISE LINE. SHE IS CO-FLAGSHIP OF THE CELEBRITY FLEET, ALONG WITH CENTURY CLASS SHIP, CENTURY. HER THREE SISTER SHIPS ARE INFINITY,SUMMIT AND MILLENIUM.

SHE WAS BUILT AT THE CHANTIER DE L'ATLANTIQUES IN ST. NAZAIRE, FRANCE. THE SHIP BOASTS A COGAS POWER PLANT OF GAS TURBINES AND A STEAM TURBINE PROVIDING UP TO 60 MEGAWATTS FOR THE ELECTRIC SYSTEMS AND TWO 19 MEGAWATTS ROLLS ROYCE/ALSTORM MERMAID AZIMUTH THRUSTERS FOR PROPULSION.

CONSTELLATION CONSISTANTLY RECIEVES TOP HONOURS FROM CONDE NAST'S READERS SURVEY,AND IS CURRENTLY RANKED BY READERS AS THE BIGGEST CRUISE SHIP. SHE WINTERS IN THE CARRIBEAN AND SUMMERS IN EUROPE WITH PORT CALLS AT POPULAR DESTINATIONS SUCH AS MASSACHUSETTS; BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS; CHARLOTTE AMALIE, US VIRGIN ISLANDS; DOVER, ENGLAND; AND ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA.

IN 1993 THE DA CLASS WERE INTRODUCED IN CORK CITY AND COMPRISED OF 10 BUSES,AN ALEXANDER SETANTA BODY ON A DAF SB220 CHASIS. REGISTERED 93C2501 TO 2510 THEY WERE THE FIRST NEW CITY BUSES BOUGHT BY BUS EIREANN. DURING 1998 AND 1999 ALL THE DA'S WERE RE-BODIED. DA3 WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE ON 20/05/2005. THE REMAINING 9 ARE SCATTERED AROUND THE COUNTRY ON SCHOOLS.

THE MH CLASS WERE PLACED IN SERVICE IN 1999. IT HAS 33 MEMBERS. MH18 WAS WITHDRAWN SOME YEARS BACK FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT.

THE PD CLASS WAS INTRODUCED IN 1990 AND CONSISTS OF 60 BUSES. PD26 WAS BURNED OUT IN THE EARLY 1990'S. RECENTLY SOME HAVE BEEN ROUTINELY WITHDRAWN.

IN AUGUST 1999 BUS EIREANN IN CORK PLACED 10 DENNIS SUPER POINTER DARTS WITH PLAXTON BODWORK INTO SERVICE. THESE WERE THE DP CLASS. THEY WERE BLOCK REGISTERED - DP1 TO 10 BEING 99C22528 - 99C22537. ALL WERE RETURNED OFF LEASE BY EARLY 2003.

ON 30/10/2005 DUBLIN BUS CELEBRATED THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF CIE BY HOLDING A RALLY AND A RUN OUT TO HOWTH. A FANTASTIC DAY FOR ALL AGES. TAKE NOTE OF THOSE LOVELY BLUE SKYS.

CORK'S KS TYPES WON'T SEE SERVICE AFTER THIS MID TERM BREAK AND KS50,94,135 & 177 HAVE BEEN PUT IN STORAGE IN IRISH RAIL'S NORTHESK DEPOT. THE SUN WAS REALLY STRONG AND SPOILED SOME OF THESE PHOTOS AND IT DIDN'T HELP THAT THEY WERE PARKED IN BUSHES EITHER!

THE TALL SHIPS WERE IN WATERFORD CITY IN JULY 2005 AND WHAT A VERY WELL ORGANISED EVENT IT WAS. BOATS AND BUSES,WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR. MOST INTERESTING WAS THE AMOUNT OF DUBLIN BUS AV'S IN USE ON THE RED CAR PARK.THE VARIETY OF PRIVATE OPERATER VEHICLES WAS VERY GOOD TOO.MANY OF BUS EIREANN'S SC CLASS WERE IN USE ALSO.THE CROWDS WERE HUGE,THE PHOTOS WILL TELL.ALL PHOTOS WERE TAKEN ON 07/07/2005.
